Threads Dance Project Celebrates 15 Years of Dance, Community, and Connection
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. At a time when many Twin Cities dance organizations have closed their doors, Threads Dance Project is celebrating 15 years of creating dance that connects people through storytelling, community, and shared humanity.
Founded by Artistic Director Karen L. Charles in 2011, Threads began with a mission to “examine, expose, and celebrate the threads that connect us.” For 15 years, the Black woman-led dance company has told “Human Justice” stories exploring love, identity, resilience, joy, and our shared humanity.
To celebrate its milestone, Threads is inviting the community to help shape its next chapter. The fall retrospective Love Evolving will feature the premiere of Tell Me A Story, a new work inspired by two stories submitted by community members in response to Threads photographs and selected by a community panel.
“Reaching 15 years is both humbling and deeply meaningful,” said Charles. “We’re grateful to be still creating at a time when so many arts organizations are facing enormous challenges. Our hope is not only to sustain Threads, but to continue uplifting artists and creating spaces where community, creativity, and connection can thrive.”
That commitment extends beyond the stage. Threads Dance Nexus provides a home for artists and community members through classes, performances, rehearsals, space rentals, and collaborations. Its Tapestries choreographer development program supports emerging choreographers, with a special emphasis on women and artists of color. NexGen/Youth Dance Project provides high-quality dance training and scholarships so financial barriers do not prevent young people from participating. Threads also partners with organizations including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota Orchestra, and The Bridge for Youth to bring dance into the broader community.
As Threads enters its next chapter, the company remains committed to strengthening the Twin Cities dance community by creating opportunities for artists, welcoming new audiences, and celebrating the stories that connect us. Join us this fall!
